Sky's head shot up when he heard a scream - a very familiar scream: Christine. Cursing under his breath, Sky wondered why she hadn't made it home yet. Deciding that he didn't have time to think about that, Sky took off running in the direction of the noise, yelling out a slew of curses when he felt the pain in his leg start up yet again. Determined not to stop, however, Sky kept running, squinting his eyes in the dark for any trace of Christine.

One of the wolves stood above the frightened "fairy princess". Her eyes were wide and she whimpered softly. She only hoped that Lyon would find her before she was wolf munchies. She closed her eyes the minute one of the wolves made move to bite her.

Sky was running so fast that his feet almost literally flew off the ground; stumbling, Sky caught himself before he fell all the way to the hard earth. Taking off again, Sky saw Chris standing up ahead surrounded by . . . wolves. Sky felt his whole body freeze as he stood in place, his mouth gaping open. Knowing that he had to help her, Sky closed his eyes for a moment, knowing that he wasn't going to be able to fight them off for long, not with his leg still weak. But he had to try.
Letting out a loud yell in hopes of frightening off the wolves, Sky charged forward. But in the back of his mind, he wryly wondered if this was the battle that Christine had mentioned earlier that he was going to fight in.

One of the wolves snarled at the princeling, warning him not to interfere. He made his point clearer by snapping at the princeling. Sharp white teeth glinted in the wolf's mouth.
Christine curled into a tight ball and whimpered softly. She was just so very afraid of wolves after seeing Sky getting attacked during the beginning of the summer.
One of the wolves placed a paw on the girl's shoulder, pinning her to the ground so she wouldn't escape. Not that the girl could even if she wanted to. The girl would be caught and taken down if she even tried.

As he neared the scene playing out before his eyes, Sky's heart froze in terror: Christine was pinned beneath the paws of a snarling wolf. It didn't look good. It didn't look good at all.
Not having the slightest idea what the correct thing to do was in this situation, Sky went on his first instinct. Quickly pulling off his shoes, he closed one eye and focused on the wolf that was dangerously close to his friend. Throwing his arm back, Sky launched the shoe at the beast, praying that his good aim wouldn't fail him now.

The shoe connected with the wolf's head, stunning it for a moment. That gave Christine the chance to wiggle free from underneath and she stumbled over to Sky and hid behind him. She hugged him about the waist and whimpered.
The wolf that had snapped at Sky, snarled dangerously, threatening to attack.

Looking around for anything that could be used as a weapon, Sky realized quickly that there was nothing. No loose branches from the nearby trees. No rocks. No nothing. There wasn't anything he could do to defend himself and Christine - and unless something miraculous happened at this very moment, they were going to be providing those wolves with a tasty snack.
But he couldn't let Christine be hurt. He just couldn't. As Sky thought those words, a vivid image flashed in his mind of his beautiful friend being bitten by those wolves' pointy teeth, blood spreading everywhere, screams that wouldn't be heard . . .
Determined not to let this picture come true, Sky, never taking his eyes off the wolves, whispered to Christine in a low, firm voice, "Listen to me; when I tell you to go, you are going to climb up into one of those trees and stay there until I find a way to get rid of these wolves. Don't even bother arguing. Got it?"

Christine nodded quickly. He was the hero and she was the damsel and the damsel always listened to the hero. "Be careful," she whispered back to him. Her eyes glanced about for the nearest tree that she could climb easily. "And let's not tell our mothers about this," she added.

"All right," Sky began, his body tense, "are you ready? You're going to have to run really fast, okay? Faster than you've ever run before. All you need to do is get up in that tree. That's it. That's your only goal. Now, this is it, for real." Watching the wolves creep closer, Sky shouted to Christine, "Go!"

Christine didn't waste a moment and ran, quickly climbing the tree, tearing her dress in the process. She perched on a branch and stared down at the scene below. Something was different about Sky - she could almost feel it. She was terribly afraid for him.

Relieved that Christine had made it into the tree safely, Sky finally turned his thoughts back to how he was going to get himself out of this situation. In the moments when he had been devising an escape for Christine he had completely forgotten that he too would need some kind of escape plan. And much to his dismay, it now appeared to be to late to start thinking up one.
Sky instinctively began backing away as he watched the wolves creep ever closer. He could run, he knew. He could probably even outrun the wolves - but where would that leave Christine? In a tree? Alone at night? No, that wouldn't work. He'd somehow have to fight them off. Somehow.
Under his breath, Sky spoke to himself, "Come on, think. Think. Be strong. Be tough. You can scare them off. Just be tough."
Knowing that this might as well be the end of him, Sky quickly whispered a prayer and then charged forward, waving his hands above his head and yelling loudly.
Forgetting the fact that he could easily be slaughtered, Sky ran straight into their midst and began blindly kicking and punching whatever his feet or hands touched.
And then suddenly it was over and the wolves were gone. Vaguely, Sky was aware that he was on the ground and that he must be hurt because he could not stand up on his legs, but rather had to hunch over on his hands and knees.
Slowly, his vision cleared, and Sky breathed a sigh of relief. Deciding to call out to Christine to see if she could help him stand up, Sky opened his mouth but no words came out. Instead, only a scratchy lone howl penetrated the still night.

Christine stared down at the wolf, her eyes wide. Where'd that wolf come from and where was Sky? She hesitantly climbed down the tree and slowly approached the wolf. She held her hand out for him to smell it - to see if he was relatively tame.
"Nice wolf..." she said quietly, her voice quivering a bit. She was still afraid of wolves, but this one seemed entirely different. "Where'd ya come from?"

Sky stared at Christine in confusion, wondering why she was approaching him as though he were a wolf. And then, slowly a sinking dread set in as he remembered that howl that had sounded as he had tried to speak . . . his howl.
Not wanting to believe it, Sky opened his mouth, determined to speak, but again, all that came out was a long, sad sounding howl.
Frightened, Sky began to back away from Christine, uncertain as to what was happening. At that moment, he realized that he was not on his hands and knees like he had thought he was - he was standing on four legs.

"Shh, I'm not going to hurt you," Christine said quietly, offering her hand for him to smell, to prove that she was friendly. "Don't be afraid. I'm a friend if you'll have me," she said quietly. She gently reached over and touched the tip of his ear, stroking the soft fur. "You're so handsome," she cooed softly.

Even in the midst of his growing fear as to what he had become, Sky felt a great irritation that Christine would actually approach a wolf. True, he wasn't exactly a real wolf - he was only one in appearance, after all - but still, Christine didn't know that. For all she knew, he could be ferocious. Mean. Dangerous. For all she knew, he could kill her at any moment with one snap of his jaw around her neck.
Wanting to yell at her for her stupidity, Sky choose instead to continue backing away, hoping that she would go home. For all either one of them knew, the wolves could still be lurking somewhere in the near distance, ready to pounce at any moment. It wasn't safe out here; that was the simple truth.
