Riven gave Chris a gruff nod before turning away to lean against the railing. Clearing his throat uncomfortably, he began, "So, maybe you should tell me a little more about this Ommadon guy and why exactly he is important." Sheepishly, he added, "If you didn't notice, I don't pay much attention in class."

"Well, Ommadon's my grandfather. Although, we don't speak of him. He's the last brother of magic. The Red Wizard. Lord of the devil's domain, seducer of darkness, master of that heartless magic the world calls black. Astride Breog, he is absolute ruler of that infernal like mass of primordial filth, which is his domain." She paused a moment.
"Any dark monster follows and obeys him," she continued after a tense moment of fighting back the fear that talking about Ommadon would bring. "Sand merks, ogres, worms - and I don't mean the kind that come out after it rains, I mean the wingless dragon kind, witches, harpies, you name it, he can control it."
A haunted look appeared on her face. "The source of his power is his crown. He can't be beaten by magic - only logic. To do that, you must deny all magic."

"Deny all magic?" Riven echoed. "That's insane. Simply insane. Because in order to do that you'd have to believe that all of this," Riven gestured around him, "that all of Red Fountain and Alfea, and Magix - everything we know - doesn't exist." Riven repeated again, "That's insane."

"My stepfather had to when he battled Ommadon. But that was years ago," she said quietly. She sighed softly. "I... I won't be able to help you if you have to fight Ommadon. Because he's my grandfather, Antiquity forbids my involvement. Family can't fight family. Antiquity is strict when it comes to rules."
She looked slightly upset at that revelation. "But I will try to lend as much aid as I can that doesn't bend the rules. The flute I was playing, and the gold shield in my room. They are two pieces needed to complete the quest."

"Wait - you said your stepfather had deny all magic when he battled your grandfather . . . so what happened? If Ommadon is still around now, then where is your stepfather? And if this Ommadon is such a bad guy, then why don't you just say screw it to rules? Family may be important to some people, but when your family is, well, evil, don't you think that maybe you should reconsider who you will fight for?" Shaking his head, Riven replied, "All I'm saying is that maybe you need to rethink things."

"It's just that one grandfather," Christine said quietly. "And my stepfather, last I saw, was down in the dragon pens dealing with Sky. He's trying to teach Sky how to be a dragon. And it's not going very well. Dad's about ready to throw the towel in."
She leaned against the barrier. "He denied magic, and Ommadon was defeated. But," she paused. "As evil is a part of all things, evil is a part of our world of magic. For the irony of all existence is that good would be totally impotent without the contrast of evil." She paused again and looked at Riven. "Perhaps when Darkar freed the witches from wherever they were banished to - perhaps that was enough dark magic to revive Ommadon. I just don't know."

His mind slightly overwhelmed, Riven frowned, "So, are you trying to tell me that someone - maybe even one of us - is going to have to go up against Ommadon?"

Christine silently nodded. "But it will not be me. I'm already walking down one path that none can follow. My gift will be my downfall." She looked at him, a sad expression dancing across her features. She was silent again. "Riven, promise me something. If you and the others have to go on the quest to battle Ommadon... Make sure you bring back the Red Crown. It's important."

"Way to be dramatic, Chris - you make it sound like you're dying." Riven paused, noting the serious look on her face, "But if you say it's important, then it's important. Red Crown. I'll remember."

"Thanks," she said quietly. "The Crown is important. It's the source of all his power." A tight smile graced her features. "I know he has dragons under his control to guard it. The flute will be the key to defeating the dragons. When played, the music will put the fiercest dragon to sleep."

"Well then, we better find someone who can play the flute because I sure as hell can't."
Riven glanced at Chris, his voice suddenly becoming tense, "Tell me something, when is this 'quest' going to go down? Do you know or is this some kind of wait-and-see situation?"

"Helia might be able to play it," she gave an idle shrug. "He seems the kind that could play the flute."
She closed her eyes and strained to see. "I.. I can't... I think it's wait and see.. I just can't pull my visions together."

Riven snorted, "Helia? That pacifist loser? He may be able to play the flute but I bet even if someone was dangling from a dragon's mouth he would say, "Nope. Sorry. I'm a pacifist. Can't help you out." He's no Specialist, that's for sure."

Riven grinned, "Yeah, you certainly called that one: no one will ever call you macho." Hoping to lighten the mood, Riven replied in a voice that carried not one bit of rancor, "You're too much of a fairy princess."
