Name: Karina Boulanger
Age: 17 (December 3)
Powers: Karina is mainly a defensive fairy, meaning that she is relatively weak in combat (she certainly is no Stella or Bloom in terms of power). Thus, she much prefers playing defense instead of offense because she can use many tricks to protect herself. Most of these so-called tricks are pretty similar as they all involve, in some form, her hiding herself from her opponent’s eyes. Her favorite power is her ability to create a shield of mist/fog/pink fairy dust; because this prevents opponents from getting close, Karina is a good fairy to have in the background of a fight. While her powers can appear pretty weak and useless, they can come in quite handy to other fairies in the heat of a fight because she can hide them from their opponents. This has earned her the nickname “Fairy of Protection.” However, Karina’s powers over mist/fog/clouds of fairy dust can only be used when she’s in a situation that requires their use. That is, in the midst of a conflict/fight. This often makes it difficult for her to practice using her powers in class, which has a domino effect. Because she can’t practice her powers, she can’t build on them, so it’s difficult for her to improve/do what’s required of her in class.
Originally from: Karina hails from Bovary, a realm that is currently undergoing a great (and quite rapid) shift from being an agricultural society to becoming an industrial one. While the majority of her extended family resides in Rouault, a sleepy country town that is ferociously resisting the new wave of industrial growth that is hitting all other parts of Bovary, Karina’s immediate family lives in Homais, a bustling city. Homais, one of the newest, albeit renowned cities in Bovary, has a population of approximately 3.8 million residents. However, twenty years ago, Homais only had a population of 2 million, which further shows how much industry is affecting Bovary. The country people adamantly insist that industry is a terrible evil that threatens Bovary’s ancient traditions; indeed, in the cities many of the long held traditions are slowly dying out. Many festivals that were once performed everywhere in Bovary to celebrate such events as Lunar New Year, Spring Equinox, and Winter Solstice can now only be found in such sleep towns as Rouault. Even more, magic, once a crucial aspect of Bovaryan life has diminished greatly in significance and use. Nevertheless, despite the loss of culture, people are quickly being lured away from the county to the city by images of skyscrapers, specialized automobiles, fine dining, mass production, better jobs and more comfortable lives. However, according to the last census, issued in May 2005, the population in Homais has stabilized and shows no drastic signs of new growth. Unfortunately, other cities in Bovary have not been so lucky and now are suffering from overpopulation. Indeed, the industrial age has proven to be a double-edged sword.
Known Family:
• Father – Charles Boulanger is a self-professed modern man. He is only one of the many people from the country who have migrated to the city in pursuit of a better life and never has he looked back. In the twenty-five years that he has lived in Homais, he has never once returned to Rouault, preferring to forget his childhood life amongst his family’s farm animals. In Homais, Charles has built up quite a life for himself; he runs a large corporation and makes a fortune every year. To him, money is power and the more he has, the happier he is.
• Mother – Bertha Boulanger is a simple, traditional woman. Having met Charles when they were both children, Bertha immediately fell in love. At that time, however, Charles was not so progressive minded, but rather enjoyed life on the farm. By the time they married, both at age 20, Charles had changed drastically and had gotten a bug in his head to move to the city. By that time, Bertha couldn’t very well dispute his word as they were husband and wife. So, together, they packed up their possessions and set out to Homais. As Charles worked and built up an empire for himself, Bertha stayed at home, deciding to be a homemaker. Five years after moving to Homais, Bertha gave birth to the first of her two children, Heloise. Five years after the birth of Heloise, Bertha gave birth to another daughter, Karina. Charles desired a son in addition to his two daughters, but shortly after Karina’s birth, Bertha fell ill. Though she did not die, her health was weakened for good and doctors advised her that to try to get pregnant again would be foolish and taxing on her health, and besides that, more likely than not, the pregnancies would only end in miscarriages. Secretly happy to never have to go through another pregnancy, Bertha was content with her two girls. Still a country girl at heart, Bertha decided that she could not let the traditions of the country fade away. Thus, she instilled in her daughters the importance of magic, something that was quickly losing its power in lieu of the industrial age.
• Older Sister – Heloise Boulanger is five years Karina’s senior. Heloise resembles her mother greatly in that she has not been corrupted or swayed by the city life. In fact, Heloise enjoys visiting Rouault whenever possible as she feels that life there is purer and easier, especially since it lacks the hustle and bustle attitude of the city. In this sense, Heloise is a reserved girl who sees the city as nothing more than a public dump for what she calls the “robot people.”
Hobbies and pastimes: Karina loves sleeping, mainly because she can vividly recollect her dreams. Because her dreams are often the seeds to many of her ideas for her future, she treasures her sleeping time immensely. She is one of the few students who you won’t find staying up late for a party – she’d much rather be in bed. Additionally, because she often has trouble focusing/channeling her Winx, she has taken up the ancient Chinese practice of T’ai Chi. Every morning she will awake at 4:30 A.M. to complete an hour-long session before going back to bed for two more hours.
Favorite music: Karina adores smooth jazz – that so-called “elevator music.” She finds it relaxing and the perfect music to dream to on weekend mornings and subsequently, she doesn’t understand why so many people dislike it.
Favorite foods: Karina likes to keep it simple; she isn’t picky in the least and actually prefers comfort food to fancy restaurants. Grilled cheese sandwiches, chocolate brownies with chunks of fudge in them, and tomato soup top her list.
Bio: Karina differs from her sister and mother in the sense that she is not quite so gung-ho set on keeping the old ways alive. While she appreciates the traditions of her people and while she does feel that it is important to know where one has come from, she has inherited much of her father’s passion for looking to the possibilities of the future. She believes in magic and knows that it exists, but she does not always see its purpose. Indeed, in Homais, magic is not necessary; all anyone needs is their mind and their hands. Karina appreciates this outlook, perhaps because her magic is not strong like Heloise’s, and thus, is not viewed as equally significant. In fact, the only reason why Karina is attending Alfea is because she feels guilty for feeling out of touch with her Winx. Her mother’s and sister’s urgings that her Winx is what makes her unique and that the city life has corrupted her has had a significant impact on Karina. Still, even in her studies, Karina finds that something is lacking – the city. Having lived in Homais her entire life, Karina cannot help but see Magix as small potatoes. Still, when she is in Homais, Karina also feels something lacking – that connection to her magic. Thus, while at Alfea, Karina is attempting to find a balance between life in a city that ignores magic and life with her Winx.
Overall, Karina is a blend of both her parents. She has her father’s thirst for the future and she has her mother’s sweet disposition. This results in Karina appearing to be a docile creature while internally she is alive with plans and ideas. Additionally, this often makes her appear absent-minded; she has so many ideas that she never knows where to begin to implement them, and so they, more often than not, remain just that: ideas. However, one thing that truly belongs only to her is her love for poetry. While she also is passionate about her father’s corporation (she has dreams of taking over as CEO when her father retires), she cannot shake off her dream of being a poet. In this respect, Karina is both a realist and an idealist; oddly enough, she doesn’t see why such aspects to her nature can’t coexist.
And in the Interview:
Who do you want to play?: Karina
Why?: I would like to play Karina mainly because she is my favorite background character (I love that she appears quite often on the show) – what can I say? She’s adorable and that’s all that matters. At least to me
Have you ever RP before? Where?: Yes, I RP here as Layla, Palladium, Sky, and Cora
How many times would you say you should post a day?: It really depends how much activity is going on, but I think you should post often enough to keep a thread going relatively smoothly.
Do you mean to stick with this site (in other words, will you NOT quit after a month or two?): I think I’ve proven by now that I’ll be sticking around.
Please write a sample post for the character you want below: *Ideas: Do something with someone (but don't control their character). Make it more than a one liner. Just post like you would in any other place.
Reclining on her bed, her blankets still tucked around her, Karina smiled and then stretched her arms above her. Shifting so that she was lying on her side, so that she could have a look out her window while still remaining in bed, Karina felt her eyes flutter half-closed, almost as though of their accord. She did love Sunday mornings. No classes. No assignments to be completed. No nothing but her bed, her window, and her view of the outdoors.
It was raining today, an odd occurrence at Alfea. Usually it was all sunshine and blue skies, but today, today was peaceful. Well, at least to her. To the other students it was probably a nightmare. They all wanted to go out and sunbathe or go shopping or sit in an outdoor café and sip coffee – she, well, she was different. She liked the ambience the rain created. She liked feeling as though she was the only person who existed.
Flipping back onto her back, Karina stared up at her ceiling and bit her lip. But as nice as it felt to be here at this moment, she couldn’t help but feel a longing for the city – the real city. Not Magix. No, she missed Homais.
Laughing to herself, Karina shook her head. She was so full of contradictions; she loved the quiet and yet she missed the city. She loved feeling as though life was moving slowly along and she was there to experience every moment of it and yet she longed for the fast-paced life of speeding cars, bright lights – the city.
Rolling over onto her stomach, Karina buried her head into her pillow and wryly asked of herself, “Oh, Karina . . . when are you ever going to start making any sense?”
