"Something between semi-formal and formal," Sky replied, slowly clenching and unclenching his hands behind his back. "Uh . . . a dress that falls below the knee or is floor-length is probably your best bet. And as for your date," on the word 'date,' Sky's voice caught slightly and he had to fight to keep from averting his eyes from Christine's, "A black suit with a tie will work just fine."

"All right," she said, her voice catching as she spoke. "Are we going to meet Alice there or are we going to pick her up and go as a group or what's the set up?" she asked, her voice quivering, trembling as she spoke. She didn't want to do this - but if Sky moved on...

Reddening, Sky replied uncomfortably, "Oh . . . well, I figured that your date would want to pick you up . . . so, I guess, I'll pick up Alice by myself and then we'll meet you and your date over at the restaurant. I mean, if that works for you . . ."
As he waited for Christine's reply, Sky's thoughts turned inward and he again mentally berated himself for ever having come up with the stupid idea of double dating. He knew he wasn't ready to handle seeing her with another guy and yet here he was, setting himself up to walk into a whole lot of heartbreak. But he couldn't back out now. He had to go through with this madness - if only to save face.

"Then Ambrose and I will meet you there," she said quietly, weakly, without much conviction. Telling Ambrose she wasn't feeling well wouldn't be too bad a lie - after all, she didn't feel well thinking about how much of a good time Sky was going to have with his new girlfriend...

"All right then," Sky echoed softly, giving Christine what he hoped could pass for a pleased smile. "Well then, I guess I'll go ahead and call the restaurant to make reservations for four." Forcing a laugh, he added, "Because you know how silly those fancy places are - no walk-ins allowed."

She nodded. "And I best find an outfit that's suitable for Saturday. No sense waiting until last minute..." she said, her voice sounding weak. The regal tone she normally had in her voice was gone and she sounded like a lost child.

Nodding, Sky started backing toward the door as he said, fighting to keep his composure, "Well then I best get out of your hair. I-I'll see you around, okay?"
Not waiting for her response, Sky all but bolted from the room, desperately in need of some alone time. When he had finally slipped into his dorm, Sky shut the door behind him and then slowly sank down to the ground. Resting his head against the wall, he closed his eyes as he groaned, "What have I done?"

Christine buried her face in her hands and wept. "God, Chris, how could you have been so stupid to let Sky do this to you? The whole date's going to break your heart," she whispered to herself.
It was official - this was going to be the adventure from hell.
