Christine settled down on the sofa in the lounge, a letter in her hand. Her blue eyes skimmed down the page and she giggled, not once but twice at some amusing comment the author made. The letter had been from a friend she had made during her trip to earth with Karina and Tash, a male friend.
She gave a soft sigh and was just about to read more when the letter was snatched from her hands. "Hey!" she cried, pivoting on the sofa to look up at Sky. "That's my letter! Give!"
And if he didn't - well, she was going to introduce him to a rolled up newspaper. Jealous prat.

Having, for the most part, re-established his friendship with Christine after the mess of Darcy's hex - something he would much rather forget - Sky felt like it was just like old times. He and Christine being friends, playing around, teasing each other - it was nice. Almost as though it was that summer again and they were just kids.
On that particular day, Sky felt more relaxed than normal; for once, everything seemed right in the world. No hexes to deal with. No talk about his once fledgling relationship with Christine. No stress. No nothing that he couldn't handle. Which was why he was in the mood to play around - something he hadn't been able to do much of as of late. Spotting Christine reading a letter of some sort, Sky grinned, a mischievous idea already forming in his mind. Rising from his seat, he casually strolled her way before snatching her letter out of her hand. He had done it out of fun and had every intention of giving it back when she asked for it, but upon accidentally catching the signed name at the end, Sky froze and before he could help himself, to tell himself that it didn't matter to him that Christine was corresponding with some unfamiliar male, he felt his heart sink. Suddenly no longer in the mood for any teasing banter, Sky gave Christine a weak smile and said as he handed back the letter, "I apologize; I shouldn't have done that. It was very rude of me."

"Damn straight you shouldn't have," she sulked. Sky didn't have to know it was a thank you letter, really. Let him think whatever he wanted. Served him right, what with his double standard. He could date whoever without any complaints but if *she* should do more then look at another guy, whooo boy.

"Well, all right then," Sky replied, trying to sound disinterested. "Uh . . . well, I guess, enjoy your letter." Rocking lightly back and forth on the balls of his feet, he lingered at Christine's side a moment longer, almost as though he expected her to divulge the contents, before he shook his head. Of course, Christine wouldn't do that. She liked her privacy and that most certainly included her letters. And so, the longer he stood there, the more of a fool he looked like. At this thought, Sky reddened before he quickly turned away and walked over to the window, pretending as if he was wholly focused on the outdoors.

She lowered the letter to her lap and she gave him a look - pity he had his back turned. "You know, there are some days I wonder if we did break your curse because you act like the biggest alpha wolf ever. You can look at any female you want, date any female you want, but heaven forbid I do the same. I get you on my case, flipping out."

Glad that his back was turned so that Christine couldn't see him turn even a deeper shade of crimson, Sky was silent for a moment before he said defensively, "You're accusing me of being jealous? I am not jealous nor am I 'flipping out.' Concerned, maybe - but jealous, no." His face having resumed its normal coloring, Sky finally turned around to face Christine as he crossed his arms over his chest. Inwardly, he knew that he was lying through his teeth because Christine was right about the double standard - but he just couldn't admit that fact to her. His pride wouldn't allow it.

"Okay, how about that afternoon that Ambrose took me out for lunch and you just happened to be at the same diner? Poor boy was so pale we had to cut our outing short because he was scared to death you were going to attack him for being with quote your girl."

Not liking the direction their conversation was taking, Sky replied tautly, "Well, he obviously misunderstood; I was just going over to say hello to you guys . . ." Trailing off, Sky shook his head as he said crossly, "Look, I don't have to justify my actions. I was just trying to be friendly that time and if Ambrose couldn't see that, I apologize." Pausing for a moment, he finally finished with a frown, his throat constricting tightly, "But I'm sorry if you feel like I've somehow affected any potential relationships you might wish to start; we're our own people, you and I. You haven't tried to stand in my way when it comes to dating and . . . and . . . I should be more careful to extend you that same courtesy."
As the words slipped out of his throat, Sky winced. Even though he was promising to stay out of her personal life in that respect, he knew that he couldn't - at least not fully. Because the idea of Christine being with someone else . . . it wasn't right. It just wasn't.

"That's it, isn't it," she said, realization dawning. "You're afraid you'll lose me. That's why you've tried to sabatoge my relationships. You don't to lose your closest female friend," she said, her voice turning soft. "Just because I want to date someone, it doesn't mean I'll stop being your friend, Sky."
She tilted her head slightly. "Unless that's code for you wanting to be the only person who can date me..."

"No, of course not," Sky replied quickly, feeling his skin begin to burn. Coughing, he added uncomfortably, "The way I see it, if I can date other people, then you should be able to as well." Seeing Christine's skeptical look, Sky's heart pounded, knowing that he was on the verge of being discovered - unless he found a way to truly convince Christine that he was over her and perfectly fine with her seeing other people when he truly wasn't. Wracking his brain for something, Sky finally said, "In fact, to prove it, I insist that we go on a double date." The moment the words slipped out of his mouth, Sky could very well have smacked himself. This was a bad idea - a very bad idea . . . and yet he couldn't stop talking. "I'll bring Alice and you bring whoever you like and then we can finally settle this thing and I'll prove to you once and for all that I won't 'flip out' on you when you're with other guys." Laughing nervously, he added, "I mean, I've moved on and you should too - and if fear of me going crazy on any of your future boyfriends has prevented you from getting back in the game, then it's obviously my duty to prove to you that you have nothing to worry about, right?"

Christine looked at him, trying to keep the hurt from her eyes. It hurt to know that he was "dumping" her this way. "All... right," she hedged. "Name your time and place," she added softly.

A part of him having hoped that Christine would refuse to go along with his idea, Sky hesitated for a moment before he said, "Umm . . . how about this Saturday at that fancy restaurant in town, Chelmsford? I mean, I'll have to check to see if Alice is free, but I'm pretty sure that she'll be available. So, I guess, if it works for you . . ."

The expression was clear on her face that she was having second thoughts about the whole idea - but if Sky was going with Alice, then she was going to step graciously aside and let Alice be the one. A few tears threatened to slip down her cheeks but she managed to keep from losing her composure. "Yeah, that works..." she said, her voice sounding very unsure.

Forcing a cheerful smile, Sky nodded as he said, his stomach churning with each word he spoke, "Good. I'm glad. I'm sure we'll all have a great time." A sick feeling washing over him as he realized that this date was actually going to happen, and that he was actually going to have to sit through a dinner watching some guy pawing over Chris, Sky abruptly said, wanting nothing more than to wrap the conversation up before he did something stupid like blurt out that he didn't want her to see other people, "So, it's final then. Chelmsford. Saturday night. Eight o'clock."

"Eight o'clock," she repeated. "Ah, what's the dress? Formal? Semi-formal?" she asked. Maybe she could plead ill hours ahead of time and not go. She didn't want to see Sky pawing Alice, giving Alice what she wanted, his love.
