Looking at Christine for a long moment, Sky finally replied, "You are too focused on me, Chris. You're always trying to find ways to help me through things and don't get me wrong, I appreciate that . . . but . . . you know how you always say that you don't need anyone to look after you? That you are capable of taking care of yourself? Well, the same goes for me. Chris, I can take care of myself."

Christine lowered her eyes and tucked her knees under her chin. "I guess... But I don't want to feel like I let you guys down if I don't help you." Tears threatened to form in her eyes but she kept the tears from spilling as she roughly wiped her eyes with the back of her hand.
"I feel like if I don't help you, then I have no real point to being on this team."

"That's just it, though," Sky said. "What I'm going through has absolutely nothing to do with 'the team.' This is personal and it's something that I need to take care of on my own without dragging everyone else down with me." Seeing that Christine was on the verge of tears, he added softly, "There's no need to cry over it; it's just the way things are."

She bit her lower lip as she listened to him. He did have a point - but she had jokingly said to him once that the team motto had been "You Go. We Go." She didn't have to explain it - it was simply understood. If one team member had a problem, it was up to the entire team to help.
A look of mirth crossed her features and she started to laugh as she thought about something. Of course, Sky would probably take her laughter the wrong way - but she'd explain. If only she could keep from laughing.

Caught off guard by Christine's laughter, Sky frowned as he said, "Uh . . . did I miss something here?"

Christine had to control her laughter so she could talk. "We're acting like you turning into a wolf is the end of the world. At least you're turning into a noble wolf. Could you imagine what would happen if you turned into a frog? The cook would probably try to make you dinner," she said with a giggle.

Sky smiled and said, "I suppose you're right; I mean, if Darcy told you the truth and whatever she did to me was just some hex she performed, then I'm sure the professors at Alfea are knowledgeable enough to reverse it without too much trouble. Perhaps I ought to enjoy this experience - after all, not every guy gets the chance of becoming as you said a 'noble wolf.' "

Christine smiled. "I should be greatful that she didn't hex me as well. I heard a story about a princess that was cursed to talk backwards by a witch, and then the witch turned a prince into a frog. Lovely messy story there," she said.
She sobered after a while. "So, how much fur do you think you have?"

"Enough for people to probably question what exactly I am," Sky replied with a wry smile.

Christine flushed prettily at the thought. "I know you may hate me for saying this, but, I think you're kinda sexy with that fur," she admitted before glancing away so he didn't see her crimson cheeks.

"Christine," Sky said quietly. "I thought we had a kind of . . . unspoken agreement that we're better off keeping things between us strictly platonic. I mean, don't you think that we're better off just as friends? Look at us - when we're not in a relationship, we do great. No fights. No tears. Just good times. But when we try to get together . . . it doesn't work. So, can we not go down that path? Not when we're actually getting back to the way things used to be between us."

Christine was silent for a long spell, her heart once again shattering but she kept it from being expressed on her features. "Sorry," she said, not knowing why she had to apologize. "I forgot."
She glanced back at him. "Well... maybe you should start on your way to Alfea - get cured while you still can tell them what happened..."

"Yeah," Sky said as he stood, grateful that he could still stand on two legs. "I guess you're right."
As he turned to go, inwardly wishing that there was a way he could get to Alfea without having anyone see him, Sky sighed. Once again he felt like things with Christine had turned sour; he was beginning to think that perhaps it would always be this way. Even if they were 'just friends,' this thing between them would always be there. It would always make it hard - probably impossible - for them to go back to the way things were. It was a depressing thought, but it was time for him to face the reality of it.

Christine was tempted to tell Sky about her shortcut but decided against it. Besides, didn't he tell her that he didn't want her help and telling him about the shortcut would be helping. She sighed softly. Well, to hell with her promise. She'd follow him as far as Alfea, keeping hidden from his view. She wanted to make sure he got there safely. After that, he was on his own. But he didn't need to know that.
