Layla smiled. "There really isn't any need to be self-conscious, you know. As that cliche goes: everyone is so concerned about what people are thinking about them that they don't have time to think about other people. So really, it's pretty much useless to waste your time on something that most likely isn't even real."
In an attempt to be friendly, Layla asked, "So tell me about yourself, Doyne - like, what's your home realm? Or your favorite food?"

Visions of Diaspro's kingdom came to Doyne's mind at the words "home realm." Jeweled castles. Royal snobbery and palace gossiping. And an 8-year-old version of herself hearing, "wrong with that girl," and "useless."
"My home realm...I live in Magix now. And maybe forever. As for my favorite food, I like pasta, but I'm stuck with cafeteria food a lot. Mom got really mad the last time I left Alfea for dinner." Realizing that the last sentence was a bit confusing, Doyne added, "Ms. Griselda's my mom. That may explain some things."
She did not add that she was adopted. Diaspro was a whole other "can of worms."

Raising her brows, Layla echoed, clearly surprised, "Griselda is your mom? Umm, wow, that must be . . . interesting. I mean, it's just that Griselda doesn't exactly seem like the mother-y type, you know? So it's kind of difficult to imagine her being one."

Musa was surprised as well, ''Griselda is your mom?!'' Musa agreed with what Layla had said. Kind of.

"Who's Grisleda?" Belle asked, spoon in her mouth. She lowered it and looked up at Layla, confusion clear on her features.

Doyne looked at the others, amused by their reactions. "Griselda is Alfea's Head of Discipline," she explained to the pixie. To the others she said, "She's not that bad, once you get to know her. Really! But I wouldn't recommend - - esh, nevermind." She put a few fingers into the ice cream bowl, muttering, "Did they put the caramel in here or did those stupid, probably non-magical, people get my order wrong?" Realizing six eyes were still on her, she pulled her fingers back out. "But being Griselda's daughter doesn't give me any social advantages. "

"She just seems really strict - not that I'm not used to strictness, because for goodness sake, I've grown up with far too many rules to count. It's just that she's not fun or even mildly friendly. She's always yelling and getting on everyone's back - it kind of makes people want to avoid her because it's inevitable that she'll rain on their parade. I mean, everyone gets that she's looking out for their best interests, but still - sometimes she's a little much." Layla shrugged casually, "But what can you do besides deal, right?"

"Layla.....what is your family like?" Doyne asked slowly. She remembered the last time she attempted that question.

Not wanting to badmouth her family, Layla thought for a moment as to how to answer that particular question. "Umm, well, I guess my family is just about like any other family. We get along usually, but we butt heads every once in a while. They're kind of strict, but I know they mean well so it doesn't bother me that much anymore, although it did when I was younger." Layla shrugged apologetically, "There isn't much to say about them; we're pretty boring when it comes right down to it."
