"A friend was injured in a battle to protect another friend and.. the doctor said because of the injury she sustained.. She might not be able to have children," Flora said quietly, purposely leaving names out for now. "She's done a lot for us so I was hoping that maybe there was a potion that could help her..."

"I'm very sorry to hear that," Palladium replied. Before he could answer Flora's question, the bell for the end of class rang and as per usual, the students flew out of their seats and headed for the door. He couldn't blame them: it was lunchtime and that meant time for socializing. Not that they didn't do enough of that in class. As the students continued to mill out of the room, Palladium said to Flora, "I wish I could be of more assistance to you, but I am afraid my expertise doesn't enter the realm of those types of injuries. In fact, I do not think anyone's magic can heal something like that, as horrible as that may seem. You see, those types of injuries are something hospitals deal with because magic, well, simply put, magic has its limitations."

Flora's green eyes started to cloud up. "It's not fair to Christine," she said, finally slipping out the name of the girl who she had referred to as a friend. "She gets hurt protecting Sky and now she probably can't have children and magic can't help her? What good is any of our magic if we can't help someone who needs it the most?"

Palladium shifted on his feet uncomfortably as he replied awkwardly, "Of course it isn't fair and if I could, I would change it, but magic is magic and it can't be forced to do something that it doesn't want to do." With a sigh, Palladium continued, "There is a reason, of course, why magic can't fix your friend's situation. You see, if magic fixes something like that, well, that is only a few steps away from giving life or for making immortality easily accessible. And that's not the way it's supposed to be. We're magical being but we're not supposed to be immortal. We're supposed to be able to be injured and we're supposed to be able to die. That's just the way life is. True, magic is supposed to help people in need, but there are other ways. Be there for your friend; that is the best help you can give her, Flora."
Glancing up at the clock on the opposite wall, Palladium said with a sigh, "I wish I could be of more assistance to you, but I do not know what else to say. I wish your friend peace of mind and good thoughts, but I fear there is nothing more I can do for her." Coughing, Palladium added with a cringe, knowing that this was not a good time, "I must go now, though; I have a meeting to attend and I am already late as it is." Seeing that Flora was still upset, Palladium continued, "I don't mean to run you out of my room, of course; in fact, if you wish, you can stay here if you would like to be alone with your thoughts. I can leave the door unlocked."

Flora nodded. "All right," she said quietly. She still didn't think it was fair to Christine and she was sure the Winx girls would feel the same when she told them what Palladium told her.

Layla stood outside the door, her ear carefully trained on what was being said inside the classroom. With a frown, she shook her her head sadly; the professor didn't sound too optimistic about being able to help Christine. Poor girl. What had happened to her just wasn't fair and Flora was right - what good was magic if it couldn't help those in need?
Hearing footsteps, Layla quickly flattened herself against the wall; moments later, Palladium exited the room and walked down the hall. Waiting until he had rounded a corner, Layla then slipped back into his classroom, knowing that Flora would have taken the professor's news badly. She was such a sweet girl who wanted to help everyone that Layla had a feeling that if she couldn't she would be crushed. Moving to sit down in a desk next to the one occupied by Flora, Layla said softly, "Hey there."

Flora glanced over at Layla, disappointment clear in her grass green eyes. "Hey," she murmured. "It's not fair, Layla," Flora said, breaking the silence after it stretched for a few minutes. "What good is our magic if we can't help her?"

Layla sighed as she leaned back in her chair, her head tilted up toward the ceiling. "I wish I had an answer to that but I don't. It all just seems so . . . stupid. I mean, here we are, magical beings, with magic at our disposal and we can't use it to do good? But others like Darkar can do whatever they want with their magic, wreak havoc or do something destructive, and they can do it without so much as blinking an eye? How wrong is that?" Lapsing into silence for a few moments, Layla then continued, "You know, I always thought that only non-magical beings had to deal with stuff like this - death and permanent injuries, that is. I used to think that magic was the solution to everything and that if you looked hard enough, it could cure anything. I guess I was wrong." With a thin smile, Layla glanced over at Flora and said, "So I suppose this is what it is like to feel cynical; I have to say, I don't like it."

"Nor do I," Flora said in agreement. "But I suppose I should have been a cynic earlier, after all, Father's arm is crippled and all magic seemed to do is make it stop hurting him. Hasn't given him back the use of it."
She lapsed into silence. "You don't think Sky would date her out of pity because of what happened? That is, if he ever ended it with Bloom. Speaking of that, what is the current situation with him and her?"

Layla gave a short laugh as she replied, "I'm betting the situation is the same as it has been for the last couple of months: Bloom saying that she and Sky are meant to be together and that he's just a little confused because Christine keeps throwing herself at him. Not that that is really true, but you know how Bloom is when she gets an idea like that in her head. And we both know in her eyes Sky can do no wrong - or at least when he does it wasn't really his fault. As for Sky, Bloom's got him so whipped that he's terrified to break up with her because of how she'll react. He doesn't really love her, at least not at this point, I don't think. I don't think it's Bloom's fault that he fell out of love or whatever; I just think that we're all too young to really expect that the person we're with now is the one we're always going to be with. Bloom bought into that though and now she refuses to accept that things are emotionally over between them for Sky. But what can you do? I've tried to tell Bloom that she needs to let go and I've tried to tell Sky to stop stringing her along, but will either one of them listen? Of course not. So I'm done trying. I love Bloom but if she won't even try to hear me, well, I guess I've just got to let her figure things out for herself."
Pausing for a moment, Layla continued, "But as for Sky and Christine as a couple, I honestly don't think it's going to happen. Sky may like her and all, but he doesn't have a spine. He just doesn't have it in him to dump Bloom, at least not in the near future."

"So, what's the expression, oh, yes, same shit, different day," she said lightly. "I swear, she's a lovely girl, the seer, and the fact that Sky's doing this to her... I wish he'd just tell her the truth. I can't believe he's willing to hurt her."

"Well, I for one am not surprised. That's just Sky: a jerk. I don't know how he manages to convince people that he's not, but I'm not buying it. You just can't treat people like that and not be a jerk. It just doesn't work. I mean, honestly, I could care less if Sky really loves Christine, but for pete's sake - she's in the hospital. Can't he put aside his feelings for once and, you know, be supportive?"
With a sheepish smile, Layla admitted, "I gave him a bit of a chewing out the other day and I told him that he ought to get his act together - but obviously, he hasn't taken my words into consideration. Not that I should have expected that he would."

"I'm all for beating it into his head with spells," Flora said innocently.

Layla laughed as she replied, "Somehow I don't think all the magic in the world is enough to fix all of the things that are wrong with Sky."
