Palladium sighed, feeling as though he was somehow betraying Flora by questioning what she thought she knew. Hoping to make her understand the position he was in, Palladium said quietly, "You must understand that Avalon and I are what I consider to be good friends. In the time that I have known him, he has been nothing less than a caring, thoughtful teacher who takes interest in his students' well-being. That being said, I do not wish to make you feel as though I completely disregard your concerns; therefore, perhaps I should arrange for a meeting between Ms. Faragonda, Griselda, you and me to discuss this matter further. Will that suit you?"

She nodded slightly. But she had a feeling that no-one would believe what she felt. It would be her luck. She rubbed her hands together, trying to keep her thoughts focused on the here and now and not on the message Bryar had sent her two days ago.

"All right then, it's settled," Palladium replied as he looked curiously at Flora. As he stared at her for a moment more, it became clear to him that something else, something that was not related to Darkar or Avalon, was bothering her immensely. Feeling obligated to ask her if she wanted to talk, Palladium asked gently, "Is there something else on your mind that you wish to speak about?"

She bit her lower lip and tried not to break into tears. "Bryar sent me a message," she began quietly. "He said, if I don't return home within the week and marry him like a good little girl, he'll do something dreadful to my parents..." She trembled.
"I don't want to marry him but I don't want him to hurt my parents... I wrote to one of the elders in my village and they said there were only two ways I could avoid marrying Bryar... One, join the sisters in the church or two, reveal that I'm already married."

Shaking his head, Palladium replied matter-of-factly, "I don't believe it. In fact, I can't believe it for the simple reason that I am acquainted with your mother. Certainly she wouldn't force you to marry against your will, even if she believed she herself might be in danger. And frankly, I don't think she could be harmed - she's quite the strong, and intelligent lady. A true fighter, that she is."

"I'm telling you what he told me. Unless I marry him, my family's in danger. I refuse to let Bryar's threat hang over their heads. Yes, Mama is a fighter, but what can she do if he turns her spells against her? And Papa's only got one good arm.."
